Bees: Honeybees, Bumblebees, and More! (My Wonderful World)

Bees are some of the most valuable of flying insects, although youngsters often simply look at bees as scary, stinging insects. Like most things that scare us, the more we know about something, the less scary they become. This pretty book is a great introduction to several kinds of bees (yes, there are many kinds of bees), and it will let readers see for themselves just what an important part of our ecosystem bees are.

Most spreads have a big, full-color, close-up photograph of bees (with a couple exceptions) with lots of interesting facts on the facing page and some written on the photographs with arrows pointing out the specific items on the photo. Some spreads inexplicably have rather clunky poems about bees. These are not well written, and they really are distracting from the wealth of really good information throughout.

In addition, there are two pages of Story Stretchers in the back that contain activities in language arts, science and mathematics, movement, and art. There is also a good glossary that covers the scientific terms used throughout the book. This will be a nice addition to any library for children.
